Grand Canyon Train Getaway One-Night Itinerary

Day 1 / Night 1

~ Check-in to the Hotel in Williams
~ Dinner buffet at Restaurant
~ One night at the Hotel in Williams

Day 2

~ Breakfast buffet at Restaurant
~ Coach Class train travel

In this package, you arrive in Williams the night before your train trip. Check in to the Hotel after 3:00 pm, located across from the train depot. The Hotel is a 288-room, three-star hotel. It features an indoor pool and spa, workout room, and a lounge with a storied history. (You do have the option of arriving in Williams the morning of the train ride, and spending the night in Williams after your return from the Grand Canyon. Just tell us what works best for you.)

Enjoy the evening in rustic Williams. Take a stroll down Route 66, just two blocks south of the depot. Enjoy the fresh, mountain air because you're at 6,800 feet elevation.

The next morning, wake up, and have a great breakfast at the Restaurant. Keep your eyes open because a gang of gunfighters has been know to frequent the Restaurant in the morning. After breakfast, it's time for an old-fashioned showdown between the gang and the Marshal. Be sure to check out the entertainment to the west of the train depot.

All aboard! The train departs Williams for the 2 hour 15 minute trip to the Grand Canyon. You'll travel the same 65-mile rail line that passengers first did more than a century ago. Enjoy the scenery as the elevation changes during the 2 hour and 15 minute trip.

Once you de-board, you'll have the option of taking a scenic motorcoach rim tour that includes lunch. Two tours are available. Ask a reservation agent about adding this to your package. Grand Canyon Railway also offers overnight stays in Grand Canyon National Park at the Maswik Lodge. Extend your trip with a night in the park. See the sun set or rise over the most famous of the Seven Wonders of the World.

If you opt not to take a rim tour, you have over three hours to explore historic Grand Canyon Village. Most of the buildings that grace the South Rim were built by the railroad, including the El Tovar Hotel, built in 1905. Along the rim, you'll find historic sites, places to eat and shop, and of course, some of the most breathtaking views you'll ever see.

In the afternoon, the Grand Canyon Train departs the Grand Canyon Depot on its way back to Williams. Relax in the comfort of your train car after seeing the Grand Canyon. Watch out, because bandits do try to rob the train every day on the return to Williams. The train pulls back into Williams Depot after 2 hours and 15 minutes.

The Hotel is located next to the train depot and the restaurant in the heart of downtown Williams, Arizona. The hotel was originally a Harvey House Hotel in the early 20th Century. Amenities include an indoor pool and hot tub and an exercise room. Each of the 288 rooms are furnished with two Queen beds. All rooms are non-smoking. Maximum occupancy is 5 people per room.

PLEASE NOTE: Observation Dome and Luxury Parlor Car are not available to children under the age of 16.

Budd Class Service:
Only available during summer months

The Budd Coach is a recent addition to the Grand Canyon Train; a 76-passenger Pullman-style coach car with air conditioning. This car features large windows for sightseeing. As the car is air conditioned, the windows do not open. Seating is padded bench-style. Complimentary soft drinks are served during the journey.

General Information:

The Grand Canyon Train departs Williams, Arizona every morning. We suggest you arrive early for breakfast at the Restaurant and so you will have time to look around the beautiful old depot and see the gunfight show that takes place a half hour before boarding time.

It's a relaxing 2 hour 15 minute train ride to the Grand Canyon. You'll enjoy the scenery, the information provided by your passenger services attendant, and the on-train entertainment (fiddlers, guitarists, and gunfighters provide some of the entertainment you may see in your car).

When you arrive, we suggest that you walk straight to the rim of the Grand Canyon for an unbelievable sight. It's an amazing sight. Then take the shuttle bus that goes along the rim and ride to one of the last scenic overlooks. Work your way back to the train depot stopping at as many of the overlooks as you choose. There are different sights to see at each stop.

Be sure to be back at the depot in time to board the train for the return to Williams on the day of your departure from the Grand Canyon as there is only one train each day. There's even more entertainment on the return trip.

Each train engine and each train car has been painstakingly restored to its original state by a staff of mechanics who see their work as more a labor of love than a job. On the train, your crew is no less enthusiastic. Each is bursting with local and Grand Canyon folklore and history, as well as Grand Canyon Train knowledge. Strolling musicians catch you up with what was hot way back when. And there's even fun recreations of an old fashioned shoot out and a train robbery.

Children under 2 ride in an adult's lap for free.

Wheelchair Accessibility

Wheelchair lifts are available for Coach Class and First Class only. Wheelchairs must be 25 inches or less in width to use the lifts. If a person is wheelchair-bound, they may only sit in their chair in either Coach Class or First Class. If a person can step aboard the train and walk to a seat in any class (age restrictions apply in Observation Dome and Luxury Parlor Car), a fold-up wheelchair can be stored in the vestibule between cars on the train.

The train departs the Grand Canyon at 3:30 pm, 4:00 pm, or 4:30 pm when there is one train running (depending on time of year); 3:00 pm or 4:30 pm when there are two trains running.
